JAM (Just A Minute) Card

Posted by & filed under News.

At Core Credit Union, we are proud to be a JAM Card Friendly organisation, supporting a more inclusive and understanding community for everyone. We recognise that not all disabilities are visible, and that some of our members may need a little extra time, patience or support when accessing our services. By embracing the JAM Card initiative, we are committed to creating a welcoming environment where every member feels respected, valued and understood.

What is the JAM Card?

The JAM Card is a free card or mobile app that lets someone discreetly say:

“I need just a minute, please be patient.”

It’s mainly for people with:

  • Hidden or invisible disabilities
  • Communication difficulties
  • Conditions like autism, ADHD, dementia, or brain injuries

Instead of having to explain their situation, they can simply show the card.

How it works

  • The card typically says something like:
“Please be patient, I have a condition.”
  • The user shows it in situations like:
    • Shops
    • Credit Unions
    • Banks
    • Public transport
    • Government services

This signals to staff or others that they may need:

  • Extra time
  • Clearer communication
  • A bit more understanding

Where it’s used in Ireland

The JAM Card is widely recognised across Ireland, including:

  • Public transport (e.g. buses, trains, Luas)
  • Credit Unions, Banks and shops
  • Government departments and public services

Many organisations are now “JAM Card friendly”, meaning staff are trained to respond supportively.

Why it matters

Not all disabilities are visible. The JAM Card:

  • Reduces stress in everyday interactions
  • Promotes patience and inclusion
  • Gives people more independence

It’s a small tool, but it makes a big difference in accessibility.
